Rise Up

Ephesians 5:2-14

New Living Translation (NLT)

Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us[a] and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.

Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people. Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God. You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.

Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him. Don’t participate in the things these people do. For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.

10 Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. 11 Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them. 12 It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret. 13 But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, 14 for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said,

“Awake, O sleeper,
    rise up from the dead,
and Christ will give you light.”

And we MUST rise up.

God has a way speaking to us in many different ways. Sometimes this may include being stopped at a red light and all of a sudden you are given this incredible idea! …But then can not find where you set that pen down to jot that idea down before your 30 seconds at the light is over. For me, this often occurs in two places that are not always the most practical.

1. I am just about to fall asleep and then BOOM, an idea comes to my head.

2. I am in the middle of an incredible sermon at church when KAPOW, the most detailed vision pops into my head.

Ironic? No. A gift? Yes.

In these moments, you can really see the Lord’s humor come out. You didn’t think God had humor? Well, think again. He totally does. I think often times we place ourselves into situations where God just stands back and chuckles. God speaks. He gives us visions. He places us in circumstances that are NOT ironic, but a gift.

“Awake, O sleeper,
    rise up from the dead,
and Christ will give you light.”

Wake up, O sleeper! Wow! It is as if we are being awaken from a deep sleep with a hard (non-feather) pillow. We get startled and spring right out of bed. RISE UP!

16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. 17 Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.

I think the Lord is always speaking to us. It is our choice on whether or not we are actually listening to what He has to say or if we are making plans from our own agenda. Sometimes He tells us to just sit and BE QUIET. Other times, He says RISE UP.

If you are persistent about your walk in Christ, you will come to a point where it will become more than a friendship. It will become a relationship.

Song of Solomon 3:2-5

New Living Translation (NLT)

So I said to myself, “I will get up and roam the city,
searching in all its streets and squares.
I will search for the one I love.”
So I searched everywhere but did not find him.
The watchmen stopped me as they made their rounds,
and I asked, “Have you seen the one I love?”

It will be in those moments where you form that deep relationship with the Lord that He will become your lover and you will be His. That voice of RISING UP will be more than a stirring notion. It will be a fierce raging storm within your heart that will wake you from sleep… Do not allow your relationship with the Lord to just get passed as a friendship. Make it a relationship that goes deeper. Allow it to become the most trustworthy relationship you could ever have.
